That when you bought a DVD or Blu-ray, a film may contain a leaflet in it that in turn contained a code. UltraViolet, you may recall, launched around a decade ago, as the film industry’s attempt to head off digital piracy to some degree.

Over the past few months, we’ve been seeing how that pans out with the closure of the UltraViolet digital movie locker service. Basically: what happens if said companies stop trading, or get out of the movie business? Internet goes down? It’s no problem if you actually have a DVD/Blu-ray/Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray/HD DVD/Laserdisc/VHS/Betamax of the film in question.īut there’s a further problem, and that’s over the companies offering you digital downloads of your movies. Granted, as much as the marketing campaigns pushing you to buy a movie to own were always a bit folly (even though we all bought discs, all that in the eyes of the law gave us was a license to watch the film in a non-commercial screening), there’s something tangible nonetheless about having a disc in your hand. Television shows and some movies are not currently available on Movies Anywhere, but you will still be able to watch any of those titles in your collection on Vudu.Whilst more and more of the marketplace heads towards digital downloads over buying physical discs of movies, there remains a degree of worry over just where people’s rights lie if they don’t have a disc in your hand. And now, you can also link your Vudu account to Movies Anywhere, a new service that brings together your movie library from Vudu and other major digital retailers - such as iTunes, Amazon Video and Google Play - in one place so that you can watch your movies when and where you want. If you have not done so already, we encourage you to sign up or log in to your account at Vudu and to link your UltraViolet library to your Vudu account. However, you will still be able to watch all of the videos in your collection and redeem your digital codes through Vudu. In addition, Flixster Video will be shutting down its website and discontinuing all related operations in the U.S.

Over the past few months, emails have been sent out encouraging people to migrate their Flixster accounts to Vudu and Movies Anywhere in order to make sure nothing was lost. The shutdown began with the service telling customers it would no longer be able to redeem digital codes on the site for video playback. Flixster Video, which let people access their UltraViolet movie collection, was not a part of that deal. That year, Fandango also bought video streaming service M-Go, later rebranding it under FandangoNow.
Flixster first announced it was closing in 2016, after being acquired by Fandango along with subsidiary Rotten Tomatoes. The website is no longer operational, and now only points people to its mobile app, which can still be used for getting movie reviews and tickets.
